Ness of Burgi Fort

About 100 BC, builders raised an excessively large stone blockhouse on a narrow Shetland promontory, leaving deliberate gaps in its wall while better defensive positions remained unused. The finished ends and imposing chamber suggest pride, display or ritual more than fear of invasion. Perhaps the fort was a prototype for later brochs, its strange proportions shaping what Shetland and mainland Scotland would later build.
