Ness Cove consists primarily of Devonian-age sedimentary rocks, including sandstone and shale, formed around 400 to 370 million years ago through the deposition of river and marine sediments. The cove is notable for its well-exposed coastal cliffs that provide a local example of the transition between the older Exeter Sandstone and the overlying Shaldon Mudstone Formation.
