Needles Old Battery is a castle-like fort built in 1862 on the extreme westerly edge of the Isle of Wight to answer a French invasion threat. Its underground tunnel still points a searchlight toward the Needles Rocks, while two original gun barrels stand in the parade ground beside exhibitions from both World Wars. The separate New Battery nearby reveals Britain’s secret Cold War rocket testing, turning a narrow headland into a layered chamber of fear, curiosity and national pride.
