Napoleon III, born Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, was the Emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870 and spent time in exile in Britain, including at this location in 1848 during the aftermath of his failed coup attempt in France. His presence here reflects the political tensions of the mid-19th century and his eventual rise to power.
