Mugdock Castle still keeps a chapel ruin beside Stirling, though no date or named builder has emerged to claim the work. The stones may have marked a private hall, a religious house or a border stronghold, but the absence of a clear answer does not diminish the place. It preserves the chapel as a lived structure rather than an invented one.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Mugdock Castle, Remains of Chapel as Chapel (period Unknown). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Mugdock Castle was built in the 13th century by the MacDougall (or MacDufgall) clan, Lords of Lorn, and later held by the Campbells after their rise to power in the 15th century. The remains of the chapel are significant as part of a historic ecclesiastical and noble site associated with the early medieval history of the Scottish west coast.
