Mountfitchet Castle Hill (Norman Castle) is a castle, fort or tower in Uttlesford, England. Perhaps the castle hill rose above the flat land like a stone fist, forcing every traveller to see it before they knew whether they were welcome. Maybe the Norman builders chose the height because distance and fear do more work than wood and mortar. Imagine a rider appearing over the ridge at dawn, silhouetted against the sky, while the village below held its breath to decide if the shadow meant trade or takeover.
