Mound

Mound, possible battle site (O'Neill and MacDonnell)

What is recorded here

Mound in County Antrim may mark a sixteenth-century clash between O'Neill and MacDonnell, though no surviving account names the exact date or outcome. The earth itself keeps the scar, raising a ridge where steel and fury once broke the quiet field. Men may have bled into that soil, their voices lost before the grass returned.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as Mound - possible battle site (O'Neill and MacDonnell). Recorded period: C16TH. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
A local battle between the O'Neill and MacDonnell clans may have occurred at Mound in Cushendun during the 16th century; the outcome is unknown, but such conflicts were part of the broader Gaelic struggles for power and territory in Ulster.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
