Ballyroney Mound in County Down is a MEDIEVAL motte and two baileys, still visible as a shaped earthwork rather than a buried guess. The mound may have carried a wooden tower, while the two surrounding courts held kitchens, byres or waiting men. A small fortress could have watched a road, a field boundary or a local dispute, with fear and daily life sharing the same ground.
