Fifty metres south east of St Martin's Church, a buried motte still holds the shape of a lost castle. Shropshire rain may have softened its edges, but the ground remembers the weight of a bailey and the hands that built it. People walked past that hill for centuries, unaware they touched the edge of a fortress. The church stands above ordinary life, while the motte waits below, keeping a darker and older secret.
