Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Motte castle 100m north east of Howton Farm is a scheduled monument in Herefordshire, England. The earthwork still stands near Howton Farm, though no building remains visible. A tall wooden hall may have risen on the mound, letting its keeper watch the valley and send smoke signals across the fields. The mound itself is all that is left, holding the shape of a forgotten room in soil and grass.
The National Heritage List for England records Motte castle 100m north east of Howton Farm as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the 12th century, this motte castle was likely constructed by a local Norman lord to establish control over the surrounding area. It is remembered as an example of early medieval military architecture and as evidence of post-Conquest settlement patterns in the region.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
