Motte castle immediately north east of Church Farm is a Norman earthwork fortification in Shropshire, built after 1066 as a defensive stronghold and administrative centre for a conquering lord. Its substantial artificial mound still rises above the Shropshire ground, preserving the rapid fortification strategy that spread across England in the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. The site remains a scheduled monument, protected because that sudden act of shaping soil into authority changed the life of the valley.
