Motte castle 400m north east of Upper Gwarthlow Farm is a Norman defensive mound built from piled earth upon ancient Caradoc Rocks, preserving the military reach of the Welsh Marches. The steep-sided hill likely supported a timber tower above defensive ditches, turning a remote Shropshire ridge into a watched borderland. Though the wood and stone have vanished, the mound still breaks the horizon, demanding that people remember this ground was taken, shaped and held for power.
