Shawell Castle rises thirty-five metres across as a flat-topped mound beside All Saints Church, wearing a seven-metre ditch like a discarded collar. It may be the lost castle of Catthorpe, displaced into memory rather than erased from the earth. The nearby rectangular enclosures still mark the outer bailey, preserving the shape of a defence that stopped leaving a name behind.
