What is recorded here
Motte and bailey in Ballycairn, County Derry, dated medieval to late medieval and scheduled for protection. A tower of earth rose above the plain, forcing every traveller to see the hand that shaped the land. The outer enclosure widened that claim, binding field, road and memory into one defensive shape.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOTTE; BAILEY; OUTER ENCLOSURE. Recorded period: MEDIEVAL; MED/L.MED. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
