What is recorded here
Castle Hill in Ardkeen, County Down, is a medieval motte and bailey later improved with a tower-house, still visible enough to be scheduled and remembered. The mound may have begun as a military warning, but the added tower suggests a family proud enough to be seen from a distance. Stone and soil both belong to the same story: to hold a place, first raise it, then decorate it.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOTTE AND BAILEY WITH LATER TOWER-HOUSE: CASTLE HILL. Recorded period: MED/L.MED; MEDIEVAL. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
