Motte and bailey castle south of Lilbourne Gorse is a Norman stronghold on high ground near Lilbourne, with a ten-metre mound, deep ditch and oval bailey still shaping the land. It faced Watling Street and sat within eight hundred metres of another castle, suggesting a small cluster built to control the route and surround. The earthworks remain largely undisturbed, preserving the shape of a world where local power was displayed in soil, timber and watchfulness.
