Motte and bailey castle 100m south east of Bell Farm is a Norman earthwork where a raised mound still stands beside its defended enclosure, preserving the shape of conquest in Herefordshire. It belongs to the period after 1066, when Anglo-Norman forces built such sites to control the Welsh borderlands, and it remains largely unexcavated because protection has kept its original topography intact. The mound may have carried a tower, a hall or a watchfire, while the bailey held horses, tools and the lives of those who sustained it. Neither part has been reduced to rubble or buried under a town, so the castle still shows the minimum shape of power: height, enclosure and the distance between them.
