Castle Hill in Bakewell still holds a conical motte and oval bailey built in layered sand, rubble, clay and loam during the late 12th or 13th century. Ralf Gernon may have raised it after receiving the manor from Richard I, using limestone boulders to brace the ditch and timber to guard the slope. The earth remains tall enough to show where people stood, kept horses, and watched the dales below before stone castles replaced the humble mound.
