Motte and bailey castle

Motte and bailey castle stands one hundred metres south east of Bell Farm in Herefordshire, preserving a Norman earthwork built to project Anglo-Norman power across the Welsh borderlands. The raised mound and adjoining defended enclosure remain largely unexcavated, keeping their original shape after centuries of rain, plough and forgetting. A knight may have stood on that mound, watching shadow move through valley grass while men below dug, carried soil and waited for orders. The land still holds the shape of that vigilance, unchanged and unspoken.
