Morlais Castle rose on a limestone hill above the Taf Fechan around 1288 when Gilbert II de Clare provoked Humphrey de Bohun into a feud that ended with both men imprisoned at the Tower of London. The king fined Gilbert ten thousand marks, Welsh rebels captured the fortress in 1294, and Gilbert died in 1295, leaving the pentagonal ruins abandoned on its inaccessible slopes.
