Alexander Cunninghame bled at his own gate in 1586 after Sir Robert Montgomerie came seeking revenge for a distant murder. The castle had already survived royal favour, forfeiture and the losses of war, but it still stands beside the Lugton Water as a sunny mound marked by memory rather than marble.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Montgreenan Castle as Bishops Palace (medieval), Icehouse (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Montgreenan Castle is a 16th-century tower house located in South Ayrshire, Scotland, and was originally built by the Montgomerie family, later held by the Earls of Eglinton. It is remembered for its historical association with the powerful Montgomerie clan and its well-preserved architectural features.
