Montgomery Castle stands as a ruined stone ward above the oldest borough in Wales, born from repeated destruction and rebuilding along the Marches. It witnessed Llywelyn ab Iorwerth smashing the earlier castle, Henry III granting princely title within its shadow, and Parliamentarians surviving the largest Civil War battle in Wales. Even after Royalist governors flipped sides like wet cloth, the castle endured until 1649, when its walls were deliberately broken to stop another army gathering. What remains is not a pretty ruin but a scarred record of border violence, where every rebuilt tower answered the last time someone tried to erase it.
