Stafford Castle still stands, but the moated site southwest of it has vanished beneath soil and forgetting. A scheduled monument marks the ghost, preserving nothing visible yet demanding that the absence be remembered. The castle kept its walls; the lesser chamber lost even its hole in the ground.
