Stone

What is recorded here

Caergwrle Castle in Flintshire, Wales still holds millstones from the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. Those heavy discs suggest the castle did not merely defend the landscape but processed grain for the people around it. Strength and hunger belonged together, perhaps forcing soldiers and neighbours to depend on the same stone before ambition or famine broke the arrangement.
The National Monuments Record of Wales records Millstones, Caergwrle Castle, Caergwrle as Stone from the Post Medieval; Medieval period. The saved point comes from the official national record. Inclusion does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built by the de Montalt family in the 13th century, Caergwrle Castle was an important medieval stronghold in north Wales. It is remembered for its strategic role in the region and its association with the Welsh Wars of Independence.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
