Miles McMullan is the first-born child of the woman who died in the birth chamber, making him the reason the house still stands. He entered the world at Bangor, County Down, Ireland, during the storm that broke the roof tiles and filled the room with rain. His mother did not survive the night, but her breath left the chamber only after the boy drew his first loud cry. The family moved him to a warmer room at dawn, where he lived to become the man who built the road out of the valley.
