Milecastle 1 is the first gate on Hadrian's Wall, now buried beneath a recreation ground in Wallsend after centuries of robbery and levelling. It may have been built by legio II Augusta, whose soldiers watched the valley of Stott's Pow through two small turrets before the stones vanished into other walls. Children still run across the grass above it, unknowingly playing on the exact mile where the Roman border began.
