Milecastle 41

Milecastle 41 stands east of Caw Gap as turf-covered banks outlined by robber trenches, having been rebuilt so often that its original shape barely remains. A cottage once occupied the site and was built from the milecastle’s own stones, turning a Roman guard post into a domestic foundation before disappearing entirely. The nearby turret 41A was deliberately demolished in the later Roman period and the Wall rebuilt across it, suggesting the empire itself forgot or abandoned the post. What is left is a place where human hands kept taking, rebuilding and erasing rather than preserving.
