Milecastle 49, known as Harrows Scar, stands west of the River Irthing gorge where Hadrian's Wall crossed the water at Willowford. Its narrow defensive walls still bond with the main curtain on either side, forming a small gatehouse in the rock. The name comes from an ancient tenement called The Harrows, recorded on old local maps, while the castle itself has watched the river valley for nearly two thousand years.
