Milecastle 44 stands as a turf-covered bank and scattered stones near Great Chesters, marking one of the many small forts that broke the long wall into watchable miles. Its nearby turret still holds consolidated masonry reaching nearly two metres, while a centurial stone and coin of Valens suggest Roman soldiers lived and marked their presence there. The path beside it follows the old Military Way, inviting walkers to measure how much of a frontier guard tower remains visible after centuries under grass and rain.
