Migvie Castle first appeared in a charter of the Earl of Mar in 1268 as the principal stronghold of Cromar, commanding the route from Deeside to Donside. Its irregular angled wall and missing towers suggest a bold early Scottish castle, while later grant to Sir John Rutherford of Tarland shows how royal favour could redirect such power. Abandoned by 1565, it now lies among farm roads and ditches, keeping the shape of a place where marriage, war and ownership kept changing hands.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Migvie Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Migvie Castle was a medieval tower house built in the 16th century, likely by the Keith family, who were prominent in the area. It is remembered for its strategic position near the River Spey and as an example of early defensive architecture in the Scottish Highlands.
