Midland Engine Works, John McLaren, and Henry McLaren blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Midland Engine Works. J & H McLaren produced steam rollers, traction and ploughing engines on this site until 1938. From 1926 they were Britain's first volume maker of high-speed diesel engines, transferring to the Airedale Works, Hunslet Road in 1946. John McLaren and Henry McLaren were brothers who founded Midland Engine Works, a company renowned for producing steam rollers, traction engines, and ploughing engines from 1876 until 1938, and later became Britain's first large-scale manufacturer of high-speed diesel engines in 1926. Their products were exported globally, significantly contributing to the industrialization and agricultural mechanization of the early 20th century.
