Midden in Dunkerron Island West

This shell midden is located on the S shore of Dunkerron Island, a short distance NE of Carrigmore point. Over 55m in total length, it survives as a large mass of oyster shells at least 7m wide and .75m thick. A thin sod layer, .05m thick, overlies the deposit which has some stone content. The island was noted in a mid-eighteenth century manuscript for its abundance of oysters (RIA MS 24 K 43). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
