Metalworking site in Killowen

Metalworking site

What is recorded here

Sir William Petty wrote in his diary on 30 August 1683 that he viewed 'the forge furnace Killowen house' and noted its 'defects' (Wood 1934, 39). The precise location of this furnace is not known. While there are no other details given it seems likely that the Killowen house mentioned is the White House (KE093-100----). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
