Metalworking site in Gortinee

Metalworking site

What is recorded here

Gortinee hid a fierce iron furnace from 1695 into the early 1800s, though no marker or exact field has emerged to show where the fire raged. The absence is not a failure but an invitation: walk the local ground, watch for blackened soil or unusual stones, and remember that human ingenuity can disappear without warning. What is missing is not nothing; it is a challenge to see the hidden life inside the landscape.
Iron was reputedly mined and smelted at Furnace and Gortinee in 1695, and from c. 1750 into the early 19th century. The location of this mining and metalworking has not been identified and nor has the source been identified. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 6 January 2020
