Erosion strips the metalworking site in Derryclare each year, releasing fragments of its lost activity onto the lake shore. The place is not a grand hall or even a intact building; it is a drowning trace that still gives up evidence. Derryclare Lodge stands nearby in ruins, but the smaller workshop may have belonged to the same forgotten valley life. The lake is not empty. It is finishing what humans began when they left tools behind.

On the NW shore of Derryclare Lake, c. 120m to the NE of the ruins of 'Derryclare Lodge'. A scatter of metal-working debris along the shore suggests the presence of a metal-working site. No structures are visible. It appears to be eroding out of a drowned horizon (pers. comm. M. Gibbons January 2020). Compiled by Olive Alcock Date of upload: 13 October 2020
