Why this matters
Merchiston Castle, located in Edinburgh, was built in the late 15th century by the Crichton family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered as the childhood home of John Clerk of Penicuik, an 18th-century economist and philosopher who is considered one of the forerunners of Adam Smith.
