What is recorded here

This blue commemorative plaque records: Mercat Cross. The market cross (mercat in Scots) was Dunfermline's main meeting place. In the days before newspapers and television, official proclamations were made here atop a stone platform. This cross dates in part from 1626 but has been rebuilt and moved several times.
The Mercat Cross served as Dunfermline's central gathering spot for markets and announcements since medieval times, dating partially to 1626, though it has been rebuilt and relocated multiple times.

A plaque record does not grant entry to a building or private land. View it from a public place unless permission is clearly given.
