What is recorded here
The public map records Mendi as a wreck.
The *Mendi* was a British steamship that sank on 21 February 1917 after colliding with the *Hampshire* off the coast of the Isle of Wight. The wreck resulted in the loss of 809 lives, primarily South African troops en route to join World War I; its sinking is notable for inspiring the poem *In Flanders Fields*.
A wreck point does not grant access or permission to dive, enter land, disturb the site or recover anything. Check current law and local conditions first.
