North Lodge still stands beside Melville Castle in Midlothian, a small gate house built to mark the boundary between private land and public road. Whether it served as a guard room, a tax checkpoint or a stubborn display of family pride remains unclear. In either case, it turned an ordinary field edge into a threshold, forcing every traveller to acknowledge that they had crossed into someone else's world.
