Melrose Abbey, founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, is linked to the veneration of Saint Cuthbert and Saint Aidan, with local traditions associating the site with healing and spiritual renewal. The surrounding area has long been a place of pilgrimage, and nearby holy wells may have been used for ritual cleansing and devotion to these saints.
