Melandra Castle was a Roman fort rebuilt in stone, probably under Trajan, abandoned around AD 140, yet large enough to support a defended civilian settlement and a substantial bath-house. The baths had hot, warm and cold rooms, tile pilae, a possible dressing-room and a timber-lined drain, while the vicus contained evidence for iron-smelting, lead and glass work and perhaps a pottery kiln. A woman’s sandal in one ditch hints that civilians lived nearby, and the name Melandra may preserve an older identity than the Roman one.
