Meikleour House is a nineteenth-century country house in Perth and Kinross that still contains an older core, standing on a terrace beside the River Tay and within the famous beech hedge landscape. The Mercers held the estate from the fourteenth century, suffered losses at Flodden and Culloden, and kept passing it through daughters when male lines failed. Jean Mercer married Robert Murray, they built the classical mansion in 1734, and later Margaret Mercer Elphinstone brought Charles de Flahaut into the house after inheriting it. David Bryce remodelled the building in 1869-70 for Emily Mercer de Flahaut's line, shaping the grand residence that still faces the hedge like a household memory made visible.
