Described in 1849 as being on the E slope of a hill near the wood of Brownstown. It comprised 'a deep trench about twelve feet [3.65m] long by four and a half [1.37m] in width, lying nearly north and south, in a level field, unaccompanied by any barrow or artificial elevation of the ground. Its bottom is carefully floored, not flagged, but the clay trodden or beaten hard, and the sides and ends were lined with large upright stones of coarse flags; but is was seriously injured about five years since by an ignorant farmer of the neighbourhood who dug our and carried off the greater portion of the side flags . . . . The surrounding peasantry generally call this monument, in Irish, "the tomb of the long man"' (Moore 1849, 11-12).
