Medieval settlement, site of quadrangular castle and relict garden between Ilton Farm and Ilton Castle Farm

Ilton Castle anchored a long medieval village on the Malborough slope, holding a quadrangular stone chamber and four corner towers until men stripped the walls in 1780. The castle had been licensed to John de Cheverston in 1335, while rectangular platforms and crossing banks still mark houses, yards and boundaries along the valley. A garden also belonged to the place, although its shape and purpose have faded from the evidence. The land has therefore stopped being a dead ruin and become a room without a roof, preserving the geometry of everyday life beneath grass and rain.
