Castle Hill in Folkestone and Hythe holds a medieval ringwork with a bailey and approach causeway that swallows a much older bowl barrow. The castle did not replace the burial mound; it mounted itself upon the dead, forcing every entrance to cross ancient flesh. Knights may have ridden the causeway believing they conquered empty ground while the hillkeeper watched from beneath the ramparts.
