Medieval lime kiln off Castle Lane, Bedford

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Mud and fire built Bedford. Men dug chalk from somewhere near, heated it until it hissed and turned white, then carried the powder back to mortar for walls that still stand. The kiln mouth may be buried under grass or lane traffic now, but the appetite remains visible in the shape of the city. Castle Lane carries chert, not memory, because the bricks and junctions repeat the same brutal calculation: take raw earth, apply heat, and return it able to hold weight.
The National Heritage List for England records Medieval lime kiln off Castle Lane, Bedford as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
