What is recorded here

Compton Castle is a 14th century manor house fortified in the 15th or 16th century and restored in the 20th century. It stands in a deep valley in Marldon, where lofty walls and corner towers replaced a moat to guard the residence. Exceptional defensive precautions, including corbelled openings built out over every door, make it an unusual fortified private home. The hall and northwest portion are ruinous, but the south range remains well preserved with first floor rooms above it.

Compton Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Compton family, a prominent local landholding family in the area. It is remembered for its well-preserved medieval architecture and its historical significance as a regional example of a fortified manor house.
