Castle Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, still holds the triangular shadow of a private castle built without royal permission during the first English Civil War. Its steep slopes, broad bank and deep ditch framed a central tower now reduced to the Cobbler's Pit, while stone footings and a human skull hint at the violent domestic life hidden beneath the grass. The house may have served as a bold local stronghold before disappearing from memory, leaving only earthworks to mark its defiance.
