Mearns Castle is a 15th-century tower house in Newton Mearns, built by Herbert, Lord Maxwell under a royal warrant issued in 1449. The Maxwell family kept it until James VI required the fifth Lord to deliver it up to the crown, after which it passed through other hands and was restored as part of the Maxwell Mearns Castle Church. Its thick walls, vaulted rooms and old entrance still stand on the rocky knoll, carrying the life of the place into the present.
