Maud Joynt was born at Woodberry House in Athlone, County Roscommon, in 1868, the daughter of a British Indian Army surgeon and one of ten siblings. That house stands at the root of a life spent teaching, examining and recovering Irish language, carrying a child from a military household into the heart of Celtic scholarship.
